Llewellyn graduated from St. Matthews High School in 1955 as class Salutatorian. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Columbia College graduating summa cum laude in 1959. While at Columbia College, she was awarded the Order of the Purple Seal, the highest academic honor at Columbia College.
Pursuing her academics at George Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University) on a Carnegie Fellowship in 1959, she was a recipient of the Mary Sullivan Award, which recognizes and seeks to perpetuate excellence of character and humanitarian service. She was a member of Phi Alpha Theta academic honor society and earned a Masters Degree in English in 1960.
Llewellyn married Herb Hames in 1960 and devoted herself to raising her family as a homemaker until 1986, when she made her dream of going to law school a reality. Entering USC School of Law, she became a member of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity, the Christian Legal Society, and earned her J.D. degree in 1989. After graduating, she served as a staff attorney for the South Carolina Court of Appeals and the South Carolina Supreme Court before accepting appointment as Magistrate for Lexington County District 2, a position she occupied for many years. Although many knew her as “Judge” her favorite title remained “Grandmama.”
Llewellyn’s passion was her family and extended family, countless friends and her beloved Union United Methodist Church. She was a member and former officer in both the Columbia College Alumni Association and the William Thompson Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She and her husband loved to travel and were active in their community and many organizations.
