In Loving Memory

It is with great sadness that Douglas A. Sawyer (aka Popeye) passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2025 at the age of 78.

He was born on December 30th, 1946 in Buffalo, New York to Lillian Fox and Gerald Sawyer. He moved to California at the age of 15 and lived here the rest of his adventurous life specifically in Prunedale, CA.

Doug was a graduate of Salinas High School. He worked his heart out at Rock-Tenn company for 40+ years, even working through many different company names. In his free time he loved to attend sporting activities, dance recitals, cheering on his grandkids as well as other kids, hiking with his family, attending birthday/holiday parties, and just simply hanging out. He was always so high spirited, so kind hearted, and just a go with the flow kind of guy. SImply the best dad, grandpa, and friend ever to walk beside us earthside.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Deborah Sawyer. His three children Michael Christensen, Michele Sawyer, and Melanie Sawyer (Jr Alameda). As well as his sister Diane Sawyer.

He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Zeatta Alameda (Javier Gamboa), Andrea Walsh, Deven Alameda (Monse Tapia), Michael Christensen, and Matthew Sawyer. Furthermore, numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. And of course an abundance of friends.

He is preceded in death by his mom and dad, sisters Dawn, Dolores, and Debbie and his brother Dallas.

We will miss him so much and he leaves behind such a deep hole that could never be filled. Heaven is so lucky to have him. Always remember, “love you more daddy.”

We Entrusted Douglas Sawyer's Care To

Healey Mortuary

Healey Mortuary

At Healey, we treat our Salinas Valley community members like family. Our story begins after World War II when Veteran Herbert C. Healey hoped to find a way to continue to meaningfully help his county and community grow. He and his wife founded Salinas Valley Mortuary in 1956 to help serve the families in the Salinas Valley area. Their lifelong mission was to unselfishly serve area families based on their strong, trusting relationship with their community – something we honor to this day almost seven decades years later....
