Jake A. Herrera
September 16th, 1939 - January 14th, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our patriarch, Jake A. Herrera, who departed this life on January 14, 2025, due to postoperative complications following surgery for a colon tumor. He was born on September 16, 1939, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Joseph and Laura Herrera.
Jake proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran. Following his military service, he attended the University of Wyoming, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. His career path led him to the Department of Veterans Affairs, where, after decades of service, he served as Chief of Engineering at VAMC Tucson; and later to Ruiz Investment Group, where he completed his esteemed career as a senior manager.
Jake was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita J. Herrera, and his brother, William. He is survived by his loving family: daughters Suzanne (Gene) Diaz, Laurie A. Herrera, MD, and Tina (Lawrence) Barela, and his son, Anthony (Christine) Herrera. Jake was a proud grandfather to Olivia, Michael, Bailey, Sophia, Jeronimo, Francesca, Mateo, Cortez, and Avianna, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Beatrice Herrera.
Jake’s legacy of service, dedication, and love for his family will forever be remembered. His infectious smile and ability to bring joy to others were matched only by his rare gift for connection. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and make them feel like lifelong friends. He ensured that everyone felt welcome and at ease. He consistently attended to the needs of his guests, making certain they were well-fed with a full drink at hand. This dedication exemplified his genuine affection for family, friends, and of course food.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jake's memory to a veteran's organization or cancer charity of your choice.
A Rosary will be held to pray for the departed soul of Jake and for healing of his family, on Thursday, February 6, at Bring’s Funeral Home from 6:00–8:00 p.m. A Funeral mass will be held to honor Jake’s life at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, February 7, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon, then a procession to All Faiths Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
Though Jake is no longer with us, his love, laughter, and kindness will echo in the lives of all who knew him. His life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to his family, his country, and his community. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
