Judith “Judy” Spencer Parris Shirey, 81, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, with the love of her family surrounding her. A celebration of life will take place on Friday, February 7th at Thompson Funeral Home on Leesburg Road in Columbia, South Carolina. Visitation will be from 11:30am until 1:30pm with a graveside service immediately following, weather permitting. The graveside service will take place at Old Gilmore Cemetery on Caughman Road in Columbia, South Carolina.
Born on August 29, 1943, Judy was the daughter of James C. Parris Jr. and Julia Hudnall Parris. She was the sister of James William Parris Sr. and sister-in-law of Jean Herlong Parris. She was a graduate of Lower Richland High School and worked for Ft. Jackson laundry services for 5 years. Judy then attended Columbia Junior College, where she began studying for a career in the legal profession. Her accomplishments in the legal profession include her employment with several private law firms, as well as her employment with the S.C. Supreme Court and the S.C. Attorney General’s Office, retiring in 1995. She also served for 7 years as a volunteer for Richland School District One public schools. She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star, Dentsville Chapter.
Judy was married to Cranford Jackson Shirey Sr. for 10 years. Together, they had three children: Cranford Jackson Shirey Jr. (Barbara), Julia Shirey Satterfield (Joe), and James Alfred Shirey (Crystal). She was affectionately known as “Mi-Mi” to her 6 living grandchildren: Danielle Newcomb (Aaron), Samantha Hooks (Kyle), Brittany Wheeler (Brendan), Brandon Shirey (Jade), and Karly Shirey, and her 6 living great-grandchildren. She was known as “Aunt Judy” to her nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law, and her son-in-law, Joseph Steven Satterfield, Sr., who affectionately named her “Judy Pickle”. She was also preceded in death by grandson Joseph Steven Satterfield Jr. and great-grandson Mitchell Steven Hooks, who were born sleeping.
Judy was a generous and loving person, who will always be remembered for her never-ending devotion to her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her. A special thanks to her nurse Andrea, Dr. Frank Sharpe and the staff of Agape Care of Lancaster for providing wonderful care and support for Judy and the family.
