Elmer "Buzz" Joseph Galbraith, Jr.
May 13th, 1939 - January 29th, 2025
Commander “Buzz” Galbraith, USN (Ret.), of Bluffton, SC, passed away on 29 January 2025, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
Born in Pittsburg, PA, on 13 May 1939 to Doloris (Fourquer) and Elmer Joseph Galbraith Sr., he and his brother, Jim, grew up in Pennsauken, NJ. At Camden Catholic High School, he played football, participated in many school clubs, was an honor student and graduated as valedictorian in 1957. He received appointments to both the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy, as well as an offer from Villanova University. He chose the Naval Academy.
At Annapolis, he excelled both academically and in extra-curricular activities, including football, glee club and choir. He had the honor of making the Superintendent’s List many semesters and he was known for helping fellow classmates with their challenges in school.
Upon graduation, he married Helen Casselman and entered the nuclear submarine force. He served aboard Barracuda, then attended Naval Nuclear Power School and Nuclear Propulsion Operator School (1964-1965) under the command of Admiral Hyman Rickover. He went on to serve on several submarines including Queenfish, Gato, Stonewall Jackson (as XO), and finally as the well-loved skipper of Ray (SSN-653) (1976-1980).
After his distinguished and decorated service in the U.S. Navy, he embarked on a civilian career as part of the teams for the nuclear plants for WPPSS (Washington Public Power Supply System) in Satsop, WA; Hope Creek, New Jersey; and then as part of the team at INPO (Institute of Nuclear Power Operations); until retiring in 2009.
Buzz was a great man, highly accomplished and intelligent, who positively impacted the lives of so many who had the honor of knowing him.
Buzz loved his three children (who all followed in his footsteps and served in the U.S. Navy), his wife, Helen, and their horses and dogs. He loved spending time with family; watching the Phillies and any number of other football teams; enjoyed talking about his experiences in the Navy; and was devoted to his Catholic faith throughout his entire life.
Buzz is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen; daughter, Kathleen of Peterborough NH; son, Patrick of Sharon, NH; and his extended family who adore him. He was predeceased by his son, Lawrence.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Gregory the Great in Bluffton, SC, with interment with full honors at Beaufort National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
