Alvaro "Al" Valverde
November 17th, 1946 - February 27th, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alvaro “Al” Valverde, who passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on November 17, 1946, in San José, Costa Rica, he was the son of Francisco Valverde Carvajal and Flora Solano Coto.
Al’s life was filled with love, laughter, and devotion to his family and faith. He was a proud father to his six daughters: Catherine Candales (Jaser), Cynthia Parker (BJ), Frances Candales (Niel), Jane Dowis (Joshua), Ileana Peterson (Ronnie), and Stephanie Valverde. He was also a loving grandfather to 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter: Angelique Martinez, Avery Parker, Chase Dowis, Christian Martinez, Daniel Candales, Emily Candales, Ivan Guadalupe, Jenna Lowe, Joshua Candales, Kaylee Candales, Meagan Parker, Natalie Candales, Rosalia Rodriguez, Shepherd Peterson, Viva Peterson and great-grandaughter Ella Rose Porter. He is also survived by his siblings Ana, Rodrigo, Roberto, Teresa, Grace, Marta, Leda, Francisco, Lidieth, Lilliam, Geovanny, Rose Mary, and Karol.
Al was preceded in death by his wife Olga, his parents, and siblings Olga, Mario, and Yamileth. His family and all who knew him will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Some of Al’s proudest moments included marrying the love of his life Olga, earning his degree as an X-ray technician, and immigrating to the United States, where he built a new life for his family. His faith as a Jehovah’s Witness and his love for his family were central to his life.
Al loved nature, taking care of plants and animals, and appreciating the beauty around him. His generosity shone through as he volunteered at a local food pantry, always eager to help others. He was known for his great sense of humor, always making people laugh, whether it was through a joke or a prank.
Some of the happiest memories we have of Al include growing strawberries in New Jersey, picking tomatoes in Port Tampa, raising chickens, and visiting Magic Kingdom, where he loved dancing in line for Splash Mountain and breaking into spontaneous song. His laughter and joy were contagious, and he made an impact on everyone he met.
Al’s funeral service will be held at Florida Mortuary Funeral & Cremation Services, 4601 North Nebraska Avenue, Tampa, Florida, 33603 on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at 12:30pm. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.
Though he may no longer be with us, Al’s love, humor, and big heart will continue to inspire all who knew him. Rest easy, Papa. We know you’ll be up there making everyone laugh.
