Dennis Whelan died at home on February 16, 2025. He was 78 years old.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Whelan of Tierra Verde, Florida. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen Fulghum of Lewiston, Maine, brother Kerry Whelan of Tucson, Arizona, and niece Kailey Whelan of Somerville, Maine.
Mr. Whelan grew up in New Providence, New Jersey. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences from Villanova University and served four years in the Navy before beginning a thirty-two year career with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Following his retirement, he authored two books: Federal Compensation for Service-Connected Disability in America, 1776-1876, and The Pinellas Puzzle, a History of Tierra Verde, Mullet Key, and the New Uplands of the Lower Boca Ciega Bay.
In accordance with his wishes there is to be no formal funeral ceremony.
