Elizabeth Lehto Hovis
April 10th, 1939 - March 7th, 2025
Elizabeth Lehto Hovis, widow and beloved mother, entered fully into the presence of the Lord on Friday, March 7, 2025. She was 85 years old.
She was born in April of 1939 the daughter of Ernest V. Lehto and Hannah B. Lehto in Nichols, SC. In 1957, She graduated salutatorian from Elizabethtown High School located in Elizabethtown, NC. After graduation, she moved to Charlotte, NC where she became a roommate of Charlotte Burgess of Wilmington, NC. Through their friendship, Elizabeth met Charlotte’s cousin, John Hovis of Charlotte, NC who later became the love of her life. Married in York, SC in December 1960, they celebrated 62 years of marriage and had two daughters, Lisa and Lara.
Elizabeth worked as a Bookkeeper for American Commercial Bank in 1958. She continued bookkeeping for her self-employed husband. Together they owned and sold two businesses. After retiring, Elizabeth enjoyed her hobbies. She loved baking. And if you ever received one of her delicious Lemon Iced Pound Cakes, you were loved! Her love for nature was demonstrated through her flower gardening as well as bird feeding. Elizabeth also enjoyed Square Dancing with her husband and their friends. Later in life, as a couple they enjoyed dinners with friends followed by card games.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hovis, siblings: Mary Ellen Lennon (spouse Charles Lennon) of Whiteville, NC; Ernest V. Lehto (spouse Nancy Lehto) of Oak Island; John R. Lehto of Mullins, SC. Elizabeth is survived by daughter Lisa Hovis, daughter Lara Hovis, sister-in-law Bonnie Stephenson of Mullins, SC, sister-in-law Carolyn Allen Lehto of Manning, SC, several cousins, nephews, and one niece.
On Friday, March 14, 2025, Hankins and Whittington Funeral Home located at 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 will host a visitation from 10 AM – 11 AM and a memorial service at 11 AM in the Chapel. Afterwards a graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park located at 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
Memorials can be made in her honor to Steele Creek Presbyterian Church at Pleasant Hills located in Charlotte, NC.
