Emily "Missy" Tweed McAlister
October 27th, 1951 - March 11th, 2025
Emily Tweed McAlister, affectionately known as "Missy," passed away on March 11, 2025, in Tampa, Florida, at the age of 73.
Born on October 27, 1951, in Amityville, New York, Emily was the daughter of the late Arthur August Brandt and Emily Tweed Sarran. She graduated from Amityville High School and built a life characterized by loyalty, wit, and resilience.
Emily was a dedicated employee of Publix for nearly 20 years, where she cherished her interactions with customers and considered her colleagues her "Publix family." She often spoke of the joy she found in helping others, stating, "When they turn around and say thank you it makes me feel good."
Throughout her life, Emily demonstrated unwavering strength and generosity. She was a devoted caregiver to her beloved cat, Solomon, for over a decade, and parrot Long John for two decades. A passionate Mets fan, she possessed a strong-willed spirit and a genuine, authentic nature. Above all, she was known for her willingness to give anything to help a loved one, even when she had little herself.
Emily was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Brandt (1971) and Emily Sarran (2000); her brothers, Stuart Tweed Brandt (2010) and Gary Alexander “Garrett William” Brandt (1995); her husbands, Kenneth Smelcer (1987) and James McAlister (2012). She is survived by her son, Kenneth “Kenny” (Kimberly) Smelcer, and her grandchildren, Logan, Hayden, Helena and Caleb Smelcer. She also leaves behind her beloved step son Jeff McAlister and family of four from her marriage to James McAlister, and ex-husband Thomas Komnick.
A visitation and celebration of Emily's life will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Florida Mortuary, 4601 N Nebraska Ave, Tampa FL 33603.
