Deloris "Deloris" Estella Lewis
September 15th, 1934 - March 2nd, 2025
"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love” (I Corinthians 13:13)
Deloris E. Lewis passed away on Sunday, March 2nd 2025, at the age of 90, at Angels Senior Living in Tampa, where she had been well cared for by the staff at Angels and the team at AccentCare Hospice. Deloris was much-loved by all, with her wonderful smile, a twinkle in her eye, warm generosity towards others, and an enthusiastic joy in all of God’s Creation.
Born in St. Louis, MO, to Dr. Alfonso Leroy Lewis and Mrs. Ruth Beatrice Lewis, the family moved to Tampa, FL in 1937. Deloris has one sister, Gwendolyn, of Manhattan, NYC. Deloris attended schools in Tampa and elsewhere. People still remember that her father, Dr. Alfonso Lewis, delivered many babies across the Tampa Bay community. Deloris was a student at Fisk University and West Virginia State, graduating in 1956 with a BA in Psychology with minors in Sociology and History. A life-long learner, Deloris studied also at the University of Buffalo, City College, Adelphi University, University of Cincinnati, Wayne County CC, and Wayne State University.
Working both as a school social worker and math teacher, Deloris impacted the lives of countless generations of students. Her own cultural and intellectual journey has inspired many in their journeys. Becoming a Head of Mathematics in the Detroit Public Schools, Deloris retired in 1997, when she moved back to Tampa to care for her mother, Ruth.
Cremation is by Florida Mortuary of Tampa and interment is at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Tampa. The Celebration of Life and Eucharist for Deloris is on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 11:00 am, at St. Andrew's on 509 E. Twiggs Street, Tampa. A reception will follow, hosted by the Daughters of the King, and preceded by ceremonies for Alpha Kappa Alpha, her Sorority. Deloris is survived by her sister, Gwendolyn R. Lewis of Manhattan, NYC. Please remember Gwen in your prayers and thoughts.
For many years, Deloris has been a much-loved part of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, the Daughters of the King, Alpha Kappa Alpha, her friends at Angels SLF, and her neighbors and friends in the wider Tampa Bay community. All are welcome to come and celebrate her life with us.
