Memorial

Lonnie David Agnew was born on March 4, 1947, in Long Beach, California, and passed of natural causes on March 29, 2025.

Lonnie went to Military Academy in preschool and then on to Catholic schools afterwards until graduation from St. Anthony's in California. Prior to graduating, he stayed with his “amuma”, Theodora Basterica Domingo Barrietua, his Basque grandmother, on Palouse St in Boise, Idaho. His parents were Marguerite Barrietua Agnew and Lonnie David Agnew II, both World War II Marines, who met at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

While staying with his amuma, he went to St. Teresa's in Boise. He completed his junior year, then transferred back to St. Anthony's in California to graduate.  Lonnie went on to attend Cal-State Long Beach University, made the Dean’s List, and graduated with a Lifetime Teaching Credential in Advanced Mathematics.

He was a student teacher in Watts, California, then went on to teach high school math in Garden Grove, California.

In 1971 he moved to Boise, Idaho, and got a quick job at a sheetrock company for four months, and decided to not go back into teaching because of the low pay for teachers in Idaho at the time. He got a job with Meadow Gold Dairy as a driver and loved traveling around the valley meeting people and making friends. He also serviced Nampa and Caldwell and went as far as Mountain Home, Twin Falls, Cascade, Garden Valley, and McCall.

While living in Boise, he visited his cousins Joe and Carole Barrietua and met his soon-to-be wife, Sherry Oberst, Carole's sister, from Kuna. Lonnie and Sherry were married in 1972 and moved to Kuna in a small place on Cleveland St. One year later, they purchased a farm from Clarence and Mike Oberst, Sherry’s dad and mom, respectively, on Columbia Rd. Seven years later, they had Sarah Dianne and Matthew David Agnew.

Lonnie and Sherry were also farmers and raised up to 40 head of beef cattle and grew hay and combined grain.

Lonnie was the head of the Meadow Gold Sales Department for the region, later retiring and selling Real Estate with Sherry while working for Wright Patterson R. E. in Meridian.

In 1997 Lonnie and Sherry lost their son Matthew, age 14, due to an accidental shooting at a friend’s home in Kuna. In 2002, Sarah met John, who took the Agnew name when they were married in order to carry on the Agnew name after Matt’s passing.

Lonnie is survived by his wife, Sherry; daughter, Sarah; son-in-law, John; grandchildren, Ethan Matthew Agnew, 16, and Austin John Agnew, 13, living in Nampa, Idaho; and multiple cousins from the Barrietua Family in the Treasure Valley and California.

One of Lonnie's favorite things to do was go to Jackpot, Nevada, which he did regularly.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 1:00pm at Morris Hill Cemetery.

We Entrusted Lonnie Agnew's Care To

Accent Funeral Home

A local landmark in Meridian, Accent Funeral Home has been serving the community since 1986. The business was first established with a vision to offer services in a comfortable, homelike atmosphere. This vision is reflected in our building, a Tudor-style home built in 1938 for a local postman. When remodeling the house to accommodate the funeral home, much care was taken to preserve the original architectural integrity of the building. The Accent Funeral Home holds a special relationship with the Meridian community and is sensitive to the area’s changing needs, providing service and friendship to comfort those we serve....
