James "Jimmy" D. Miller

In Loving Memory
James D. Miller “Jimmy,” 76, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on April 23, 2025. He was born October 6, 1948, in Greenville, SC. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Miller, his adoptive father, James M. Miller, and his biological father, Frank Edward Greco.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 53 years in August, Mary L. Miller; sons, J. Paul Miller (Sara) and Ben Miller (Emily); daughter, Beth Kizzire (Scott); ten grandchildren, Isabella, Anna, Olivia, Caroline, Abby, Virginia, Seth, James, Julia, and Emily; siblings, Mike Greco (Lori), Pat Kauts (Harold), Theresa Greco, Frank Greco, Mary Greco, Joseph Greco-deceased (Shana), James Greco (Donna), Rosemary Greco-deceased, Jack Miller-deceased, Susan Pittman-deceased, Danny Miller; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Jimmy was a well-loved and longtime member of Grace Baptist Church serving as a deacon and in various ministries throughout his life. He was also very involved in Grace Christian School as a soccer coach, field trip driver, and supported the school in any capacity that he was able.
Jimmy joined the U.S. Army in 1968 and bravely served during the Vietnam War, where he was wounded in combat and later awarded the Purple Heart. After returning home, he continued to serve his country in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in 2005. He was actively involved in the Purple Heart Organization, where he held the roles of Chaplain and Regional Commander. In recognition of his service to South Carolina, he was honored with the Order of the Palmetto in 2018. Jimmy also dedicated years of service as a firefighter with the Parker District, South Congaree, and Fort Jackson Fire Departments, retiring in 2005. Additionally, he worked for many years at Thompson Funeral Home.
Jimmy was known as a son, a brother, a husband, a father and a friend by many in his community. He was known to strike up conversations wherever he went. A true people person, he found joy and purpose in helping others around him. He loved sharing his faith and often invited people to come to his church, the cornerstone of his life. He was a faithful husband and father. He shared with his family a love of fishing, hunting, camping, and traveling. Above all, his guidance and unwavering support will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Jimmy, your love will always be cherished. Daddy, we will continue to take care of each other. Papaw, we will continue to be your pride and joy. Brother, you have brought much joy to our lives. While we mourn your passing, we take comfort in knowing that you are now in the arms of Jesus!
Services will be held on Monday, May 5, 2025 at 12 pm at Grace Baptist Church, 416 Denham Ave, West Columbia, SC. Family will receive friends from 10 am-12 pm at the church with burial at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 2 pm. Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, Sound and Lighting Project in lieu of flowers.
