Shelby Jean Harrington
August 11th, 1940 - May 28th, 2025
In Loving Memory
Ms. Shelby Jean Harrington, 84, of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025 while under the care of Beacon Place in Greensboro. Born in Anderson County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late James and Zoe (Stacks) Wilson, and wife of the late Dwayne Harrington.
Shelby spent most of her career (over three decades) as an optometric assistant to Dr. Gene K. Bates in Greensboro. In recent years, she loved watching televised sports, including golf, the NFL, and NASCAR. Her favorites, however, were Hurricanes hockey and Clemson football–the latter of which dominated her social calendar on autumnal Saturdays. She was also an avid reader of novels and true crime. She adored and pampered her cats, and always had at least one feline companion in her home.
Shelby is survived by three of her children: Janet Varner (Randy), Charles Davenport Jr. (Maureen), and Scott Davenport; her grandchildren, Lindsay Kirkman (Joey), and Matt Varner (Heather); and by her great-granddaughter, Caroline Varner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Davenport (Sr.), and by the younger of her two daughters, Pamela Davenport.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum, 3601 Whitehurst Rd, Greensboro, NC 27410 on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guilford County Animal Services, 980 Guilford College Rd., Greensboro, NC 27409.
Friends and family may sign the guestbook online at www.piercejeffersonfh.com
