James Donald Reutlinger, affectionately known as Jim or J.R., passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, in Chico, California, at the age of 73, surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born on November 23, 1951, in Grand Island, Nebraska, the middle child of Donald and Lillie Reutlinger. He grew up in California and attended Cupertino High School (Class of 1969), where he played the bass clarinet and served as Drum Major his senior year. During high school, he also joined the San Jose Police Cadet Program, which sparked a lifelong dedication to public service.

Jim graduated from California State University, Chico in June 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration. In 1975, he began his law enforcement career with the Butte County Sheriff's Office, working in the jail for two years before joining the Santa Rosa Police Department in 1977. Over the next 28 years, Jim served the Santa Rosa community with distinction, retiring in 2003 as a Commander.

Throughout his career, Jim was known for his forward-thinking approach and passion for innovation. He played a key role in modernizing the department’s technology and was especially proud of his leadership as Commander of the SWAT Team, Bomb Unit, and Crisis Negotiators. He also made significant contributions to the Sonoma County Law Enforcement Consortium.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Clarice Lydon Reutlinger; his son Brian (Elizabeth); his daughter Michelle; and his four grandsons, Brian Jr., Diego, Seth, and Hunter. He is also survived by his brothers Rick (Leslie) and Will; his mother-in-law Shirley Lydon; brothers-in-law Kelly Lydon, Keith (Robi) Lydon, and Kirk (Yvonne) Lydon; and numerous nieces, great nieces, and cousins who brought him great joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lillie Reutlinger, and his father-in-law, Clarence Lydon.

Jim will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to public service, his love for family, technology, and giving nature. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the community he helped shape.
