Barbara Jean Smith

Barbara Jean (Moore) Smith, 78, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, after a battle with ALS at The Fountains, Yuba City, CA. She was born on October 20, 1946, in Pasadena, CA, the daughter of James Henry Moore, and Betty Jean (Bowman) Moore.

Her family lived in Randsburg, CA, briefly and then moved to Susanville, CA, where Barbara completed her early education and graduated from Lassen High School, class of 1964.

In high school, Barbara earned her Athletic Letter in Field Hockey and Basketball. She was a song leader for the school athletics and sang in Lassenett's Glee Club. Following graduation, she worked in banking.

On November 20, 1965, Barbara married Edmund Smith; a marriage that lasted until her death. Ed and Barbara were parents of Edmund Smith and Eric Smith.

Barbara began a career with Yuba City Unified School District that culminated after 26 years until her retirement.

Following retirement, she worked for a software development firm in San Mateo, CA, and the Yolo County Office of Education, retiring again in 2006.

Friends will remember her for her years of attending her children and grandchildren's athletic events and volunteering, including President of Yuba Sutter Youth Soccer Association, Treasurer of Jack and Jill Playschool, President of Yuba City Unified Classified Employees Association, member of Lyoness club, and chair of the California Prune Festival Committee on Arts and Crafts.

Barbara was an enthusiastic Bingo player, traveler, sports fan, dinner companion and supporter of her husband's Rotary and Masonic activities.

Both Ed and Barb worked for five years for the Sacramento Rivercats Baseball team as ushers for a fun pre-retirement experience.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine; and brother, Cory.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Edmund, are her sons, Edmund Smith, and his wife, Brenda, of Rocklin, CA, and Eric Smith and his wife, Fiona, of Yuba City, CA; four grandchildren, Eddie Smith and his fiancee, Catherine Moore, of Citrus Heights, CA, Thomas Smith and his wife, Dharma of Roseville, CA, Mekenzie Whaley of Fargo, ND, and Emily Smith of Yuba City, CA; twin sisters, Sandra Sanchez and husband, Maurice, and Suzanne Langslet and husband, Randy; stepmother, Patricia Moore, all of Susanville, CA; brother, James Moore and his wife, Charity, of Janesville, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial will be held at Ullrey Memorial Chapel on Friday, July 25, 2025, at 11 AM. Reception to be held at The Harvest Room 1475 Tharp Rd.,Yuba City, CA, at 12 PM.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Yuba City Rotary Scholarship Foundation or the UC Davis Eye Center in her name.
