R. Haynes Carswell, Jr.
October 20th, 1940 - January 23rd, 2024
R. Haynes Carswell Jr passed away on January 23, 2024, with his family by his side. He was born in Jacksonville FL on October 20, 1940. Haynes was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Helen Carswell, his sister, Mary Helen Carswell Commander and Jane’s parents, Fred and Helen Martin. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1958 and attended Jacksonville University and the University of Florida. Family was very important to Haynes. He was especially proud of his loving wife of 53 years, Jane. His children, Ashley (Charles) Rini and Trey (Kim) Carswell were very special to him, and his greatest joy were his grandchildren Gates Carswell and Charlie, James, and Sam Rini. Anyone who knew Haynes, knew of his love and devotion to his loyal Labrador companions, Lulu, and Hannah. In addition to his immediate family, Haynes is survived by his special niece, Charlotte Commander Jarrell (Doug) and sons, Baker, and Stuart; sister and brother-in law, Rosann, and Tom Creed; nephew, Jackson Elsberry (Kim) and sons Gregory and Jake. He was blessed with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Haynes was proud to have been a member of the U.S. Marine Reserves, rising to the rank of sergeant. He spent more than 50 years in the steel business. He started with Florida Steel Corp., then joined O’Neal Steel of Birmingham, Alabama where he was in sales and marketing, finally becoming District Manager for O’Neal in Tampa. His 21 years with O’Neal were some of the happiest and most enjoyable of his career. During this time, he became a member of the Rotary Club of Tampa and board member of the Tampa Yacht Club. Before starting his own company, Direct Metals, he also worked for Tampa based McNichols Company. Direct Metals was Haynes’ pride and joy and the highlight of his career. In the establishment of Direct Metals Company, Haynes felt very blessed to have found wonderful partners in Tom and Jane Hoover, John Hoover, and Tom Hoover, III. Without their hard work and unending support, along with the many dedicated employees, Direct Metals would not be the successful company it is today. Haynes and Jane moved to Atlanta to begin this successful endeavor and Haynes always spoke highly of Jane’s willingness to support him in this move saying, “it never could have been done without her support.” Haynes will always be remembered for his love of adventure. He loved sailing with Fred and Helen and the great times he had with them and his family. He loved the thrill of riding his motor cycle in the Georgia hills and snow skiing in Colorado with friends and family. He also enjoyed golf but never felt he had mastered the game. His friends will always remember his frustration and colorful language. Haynes enjoyed his weekly workouts and daily dog walks. Haynes and his family were long time members of Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church. He served as a past elder and member of Followers of the Way. He also volunteered at the Faith Café. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Palma Ceia Presbyterian Youth Ministry, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, or the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church, 2501 W. San Jose Street.
