Asa (Ace) L. Garl January 4, 1942 – August 27, 2018 Ace was born in Los Angeles County and grew up during the war years. He spent his early years with his maternal grandparents Comer and Alice Tate on their farm while his Mother worked in the factories for supplying the war effort. He left high school early and joined the Army. Most of his tour was spent Germany as a tank driver where he had many adventures during the Berlin crisis. Upon completion of his tour he returned to California. In 1967 he moved to Fairbanks, Alaska. During the pipeline boom Ace worked in every camp on the Alaska Pipeline as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic. He was disabled with a knee injury and took up photography. He had a photo restoration business and was active in the Fairbanks Camera Arts. He retired to Oregon in 2006 to help out with family. He continued his photography as a hobby and took over a 1,000 pictures at the Swan Island Dahlia farm. Ace is survived by his wife Cathy Erland, children Robin and Scott of Oklahoma, David of Longview, Washington, sister Denise Riley of Oklahoma, brother Timothy Johnston of Reno, Nevada, step-father Rudy Witt of Grass Valley, California, step-son Robert Perry and step daughter Michele Johnson both of North Pole, Alaska, Zesty his yellow Labrador retriever, Izzy and Pekoe his two pugs.
