Joseph C. Szaflarski
February 2nd, 1914 - March 15th, 2011
97, formerly of Largo, died March 15, 2011 at his home in Welaka, FL. Mr. Szaflarski was born Feb. 3, 1914 to Karol and Alexandra Szaflarski in Chicago, IL. After high school and short careers playing both semi-pro football and baseball, he attended New Mexico A&M for two years. In Sept., 1942 he joined the Army Air Corps, became a P-38 Lightning Pilot, and flew 54 missions in northern Africa. After his tour of duty, Joe was stationed in New Castle, DE, where he met his future bride, Isabelle Barnes. On Aug. 11, 1945, Joe and Isabelle were married and shared 58 years together. Upon his discharge from the Air Force as a Captain, he began a 30 year career with Seaboard World Airlines, where he was a Captain and flew multiple aircraft culminating with the Boeing 747. He is survived by his daughter, Jane (Bud) Bowley; sons, Joseph (Pinky), Dale (Linda), and Karl; and six grandchildren, Brian, Tracy, Karla, Krista, Kara and Angie. He was predeceased by his wife, Isabelle, his parents, and three sisters. A visitation will be held from 9:30-11:30 AM on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at the 7820 38th Avenue North location. A Funeral Mass will follow at 1 PM at St. Mathew Catholic Church. The burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven Hospice, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177.
