Frank Goodwyn

Dr. Frank Goodwyn, 89, of St. Petersburg, died Thursday February 15, 2001 at St. Petersburg General Hospital of heart failure and complications from a broken hip. Born in Alice, Texas, on June 28, 1911, he was a professor of Spanish from 1950 ?1981 at the University of Maryland. He was the author of Life on the King Ranch, Lone Star Land, The Devil in Texas, Poems about the West, and two novels: The Magic of Limping John and The Black Bull, along with numerous articles, most concerning the golden age of Spanish literature. Other publications include 33 signed articles in encyclopedias, 23 scholarly articles on folklore, literature and history, 40 poetry columns and book reviews. He received various awards, including the J. Frank Dobie Fellowship in Southwestern Literature, the Julius Rosenwald Fellowship, and The Jeff Dykes Memorial Award for Notable Contributions to Western Affairs. He came here in 2000, after 50 years residence in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was a member of the American Folklore Society, Modern Language Association, Ellicott Street Poets, past president and current member of the Texas Folklore Society and the Federal Poets, past sheriff and current member of the Westerners, Potomac Corral, and a member of the Border Poets. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Goodwyn of St. Petersburg, two sons, Francis E. Goodwyn of Harlan, Kentucky and L. Wayne Goodwyn of Key West and St. Petersburg, a brother, Finley Goodwyn of Cuero, Texas, a sister, Lenny Province of May, Texas, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services will be at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes and Cremation Tribute Center?Ninth Street Chapel, St. Petersburg, on Saturday, February 17, 2001. His body will then be shipped to Rockville, Maryland, to lie beside his daughter, Janet Ethel Goodwyn 1944-1968.
