Elmer B. Campbell
July 2nd, 1921 - June 11th, 2008
Campbell, Dr. Elmer B., a surgeon who practiced in the St. Petersburg area for 38 years, died Wednesday at 86. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Campbell graduated from Emory Medical School. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1951 from New York City, where he was a surgical resident at Bellevue Hospital. After medical school, Dr. Campbell served as a Naval medical officer in World War II and the Korean War. He was in the active Navy Reserves for thirty years and retired as a Commander. Dr. Campbell had a distinguished medical career in St. Petersburg, as a staff member of Bayfront Medical Center, St. Anthony's, Edward White, St. Petersburg General and Palms of Pasadena hospitals. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a President of the American Cancer Society. He founded the Oncology Clinic at Bayfront Medical Center and was the Editor of the Pinellas County medical Journal. Dr. Campbell was an avid tennis player, a world traveler and a student of Renaissance Art. He is survived by this wife of 63 years, Mary; his son, Alan Campbell; his grandson, Ian Blake Campbell; and his granddaughter, Morgan Freeble Johnson. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Kathleen Campbell Freeble in 2007. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, June 15, at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home-NE St. Petersburg, 2201 Dr. M.L. King St. N.
