He graduated from Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School. Greg was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1986 to 1991, serving in the Gulf War’s Operation Desert Shield. He married Esther Booker on May 23, 2014 in Kent, Washington. He is survived by his wife, Esther Mitchell; son, Malik L.J. Mitchell; daughter, Mary L.J. Mitchell; stepdaughters, Aujane L. Owens, Jhonay E. Owens, Aysia M. Owens; grandson, Malachi Dean Hoard; mother, Brenda J. Carter; and sisters, Mari and Sheri Carter of Nashville, Tennessee.
