Ed Moore
June 13th, 1941 - May 16th, 2013
Charles Edward "Ed" Moore, 71, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at his home. Ed Moore most recently served as a Corporate Trainer for K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc., the parent company of the Food City grocery chain. Ed previously served as store manager of Food City's Eastman Road location in Kingsport, TN. He has been a Food City associate for over 50 years. In 2003, Ed received the coveted International Store Manager Superior Service Award from Food Marketing Institute. In addition to knowing almost every customer who walked through the door of his store, Ed was also an icon within his community. His community service began right after his high school graduation and included a long list of organizations. For over 20 years, he contributed his time and talents to his favorite event, the Santa Train. Just last year, Ed became the first recipient of the Santa Train Service Award. He was also a board member of his local American Red Cross chapter for 18 years, board member of Small Miracles Therapeutic Riding Center for 15 years, and chairman of the Red Cross Armed Forces committee and Indian Path Hospital Foundation. He was an active volunteer and board director with Goodwill Industries, a Lt. Governor and Past President of the Downtown Kingsport Optimist Club, a board member of Appalachian Inter-Mountain Scholars, past member of the Eastman Chemical Company's Community Advisory Board, and volunteer for the annual Fun Fest and Food City Family Race Night Events. In 2011, Ed received the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce's distinguished Lifetime Member award. Ed was also a regular visitor with families to lend support at Wellmont Hospice House and handled the logistics for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Ed's other community service work included the First Presbyterian Church Shepherd Center, which helps individuals without insurance get the medical equipment they need. He also volunteered his time to the Kingsport Convention and Visitors Bureau, East Tennessee State University Pride Week Committee, and the ETSU of Kingsport Athletic Committee. He was the recipient of the American Legion's prestigious Distinguished Service Award and a Food City Claude P. Varney District Award winner. He also assisted with the Kingsport Christmas Parade, Fourth of July Parade, and was a devoted city and county school volunteer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Jennings Moore in 2000; a son, Brian Moore and by his father, Charlie Moore. Survivors include his son, Scott Moore of Kingsport; grandson, Kade Moore of Erwin; mother, Mae Bell Moore of White Pine, TN; sister, Patsy Talley & husband Johnny of Morristown; two brothers, Ralph Moore of White Pine and Johnny Moore & wife, Anita of Morristown along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephew. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 5 pm on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at the Buck Van Huss Dome at Dobyns-Bennett High School, 1800 Legion Drive, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 5 pm with Rev. Frank Waldo. Eulogy will be provided by Steve Smith, Dennis Phillips and Jamie Horton. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Monday, May 20, 2013 at East Lawn Memorial Park, Kingsport. Tommy Stanley, Mark Hubbard, Billie J. Crawford, Joel Bowman, Haskel Bledsoe, Jon Hammonds, & Rick Miller, will serve as pallbearers. Miles Burdine, Dennis Phillips, Steve Smith, Don Royston and Danny Gordon will serve as honorary pallbearers. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:55 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Mr. Moore to the Santa Train, C/O Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Attn: Elaine Bodenweiser, 400 Clinchfield Street, Suite 100, Kingsport, TN 37660 and to the American Red Cross, 501 S. Wilcox Drive, Kingsport, TN 37660. Food City is funding the Ed Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund through Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation. Those wishing to make a contribution are welcome to do so by submitting a check, made payable to Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation. Please be sure to note the Ed Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund in the memo line of the check.
