Gregory Kent Stanley
June 18th, 1958 - June 3rd, 2015
Calhoun, GA - Dr. Gregory Kent Stanley was born on June 18, 1958 in Kingsport, Tenn and grew up in North Hunginton, PA. He attended Norwin High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History at Oklahoma State University and his Master of Arts in History at the University of Virginia. He earned his PhD in History at the University of Kentucky. He held Georgia certificates in Social Sciences and Gifted Education. He began his teaching career at the University of Virginia. He taught for twelve years at the University of Kentucky before moving to Georgia. He started teaching at Calhoun High School while he was a student teacher enrolled at Berry College. Upon completing his work at Berry College, he taught at Rome High School for two years. From Rome, he moved to Calhoun High School where he began teaching full-time. He was the girls' track and field coach at CHS for more than a decade. He started his coaching career at the University of Virginia and CHS is the fourth high school at which he coached. He coached 10 individual state champions and over 60 state medalists. Under his guidance, more than 20 track athletes were offered collegiate scholarships. Dr. Stanley was an avid writer and authored five books and more than 30 scholarly articles. He was a scholar and a gentleman. He loved his profession and, most of all, he loved his students. Dr. Stanley was preceded in death by his mother, Jo Ann Stanley and his brother, Charles Kenneth Stanley. He is survived by his father, Charles Stanley; his nephew, Chad Stanley and a host of friends. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in Kingsport. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. Larry Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Holston View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jose Deguzman, James Poole, Jo Jo Quejada, Roderick Boggs, Bill Parker, Richard Hunsaker and Rodney Boggs. Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport is serving the Stanley family.
