Diane E. (Penny) Olson Nuttleman a loving wife, mother and grandmother passed into eternal happiness on January 2nd, 2020, in Venice, Florida. She was born October 9, 1944 in Concord, California to parents, Robert A. Olson and Jean E. Wade Olson, while her father was serving as a U.S. Naval aviator during WW II. After the war she returned with her family to Lincoln, Nebraska, where her father was an Agronomy professor at the University of Nebraska. Penny graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School and also the American International School in Vienna, Austria, where her father was on a teaching sabbatical. After graduation she attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska with an education degree. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority in college. During the 1966-67 school year, she taught high school English in Aurora, CO. In 1966, over Thanksgiving break, she returned to Lincoln and met a 1st year law student at the Univ. of Nebraska College of Law, David C. Nuttleman, who she married on Sept. 3rd 1967, in Estes Park, CO. During her husband's final 2 years of law school, she taught English and Journalism at Wahoo, NE high school. Upon her husband's graduation in May 1969, David and Penny moved to Gering, Nebraska where David practiced law. Penny taught English and Journalism in the Gering Middle School and High School. In 1989, David and Penny moved to Venice, FL where she was employed by the City of Sarasota Police Dept until her retirement in 2005. David and Penny were blessed with 3 children, including 2 daughters, Catherine Rein of Louisville, CO and Lisa Gazzam of Euless, TX, who both survive her along with their husbands, Travis Rein and George Gazzam and grandchildren Mason and Kyra Rein and Tyler and Elizabeth Gazzam. She is predeceased by her son, Daniel, and her parents, Robert and Jean Olson. She is also survived by her husband, David, her adopted mini-Aussie, Chipper and her brothers James Olson of Punta Gorda, FL and Dr. Patrick Olson of San Diego, CA. Following retirement, she was actively involved in her church, PEO and AAUW. She also volunteered regularly at the South Sarasota County food pantry in Venice. She enjoyed her grandchildren, was an avid reader and a member of numerous book clubs. She spent many hours helping over 40 local high school girls obtain PEO scholarships over the past 20 years. David and Penny also enjoyed traveling and went on many cruises and numerous trips to Europe. She is going to be missed greatly by David, her family and her many, many friends in NE and FL. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Venice United Church of Christ on January 7th, at 2:00pm with a gathering of friends and family in the church fellowship hall following the service. Burial of her ashes along with those of her son, Daniel, who passed away on Dec. 18th, 2006, will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff, NE at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family hopes that donations be made to the Venice UCC Mental Health Ministry Group, the South Sarasota County Food pantry, Suncoast Humane Society or a charity of your choice in her memory.
