Edward Harold Kloss, Jr.
January 23rd, 1910 - September 18th, 2010
Edward was born to Edward H. Klos and Nellie Carlson Klos in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was the oldest of 7 siblings: Gladys, Lester, Andrew, Kenneth, Marjorie and Arlene. His stories of their adventures were always great entertainment. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, School of Mining Engineering, he traveled to New Jersey to try out his engineering skills. He quickly discovered that New Jersey was not his cup of tea and returned to St. Paul where he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 1938, with his expertise in soils, the Corps sent him to Fort Peck, Montana to assist in the redesign and new construction after the failure of Fort Peck Dam. At that time, it was the worlds largest earth-fill dam. It was in the small church there, that he met Edith Floren, a teacher at Fort Peck School. They married in Wolf Point, Montana, on Christmas Eve, 1939. He continued to work with the Corps in Fort Peck, Fort Lincoln, North Dakota, and McNary, Oregon, before he transferred to the Seattle office. Of his many projects for the Corps, his most challenging and memorable was damage assessment after the Alaska earthquake in 1964. After his retirement, Edward continued attending various conferences, and local civil engineering meetings well into his 90s,Edward is survived by his wife and best friend Edith, his daughter Janis Bradford and son-in-law John Weswig. His biggest joy was his grandsons George (Shannon), Andrew (Dawn) and Daniel (Brenda) Abed and great-grandchildren Nickolas, Elizabeth, Thomas, Carson and Samantha. He actively served in the church council and as congregational president at Hope Lutheran in North Seattle. He lived a full life enjoying his garden, fishing, golfing, reading, photography and puttering in his workshop. He will be remembered by all who knew him as one who loved God and family, grew pink roses for his beloved wife, cultivated beautiful rhododendrons and as the official extended family photographer.A private family burial service will be followed by a memorial service at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Seattle on Friday, 10/1/10 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Lutheran World Relief Fund or a favorite charity.
