Vernon Ray
May 15th, 1931 - July 16th, 2014
Vernon Ray, 83, of Venice passed away unexpectedly on July 16, 2014. Mr. Ray served his country in the 1st Marine Division during the Korean Conflict, where he was held as a Prisoner of War for 9 months. Vernon served as Commander for the State of Florida All POWs, as Sergeant at Arms for the National All POWs in Texas, as Commander of the Peace River Chapter for 1 year, and as Commander for the Tri-County Chapter for 2 years. Vernon helped so many veterans obtain their benefits and medications with the VA, holding regular sessions every Monday at Bay Pines. Vernon is survived by Delorise, his wife of 59 years, daughter Nancy Jean Holland and son Bryant Ray, both of Port Charlotte, grandchildren Vanessa Monsour, David Holland, Nicole Smith, & Josh Ray, 7 great grandchildren, brothers Alvary Ray of Englewood & Clarence Ray of Kentucky, and sisters Mavis Wysong of Michigan, Linda Gomesch of Tennessee, and Sue Webb of Kentucky. Vernon's family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 until 4:00pm Sunday, July 20th, with a celebration of his life at 3:00pm Monday, July 21st in The Chapel at Farley Funeral Home. A reception will follow services at 4:00 pm. Interment with full military honors will take place later at Arlington National Cemetery. To send condolences, please visit www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
