Jason Riley Spoone, 36, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at his home in Surfside Beach, SC after an extended stay in the hospital for a respiratory infection. Born on November 29, 1987, in Columbia, SC, Jason grew up in the Shandon/Rosewood area before moving to Lexington, where he attended White Knoll High School.

Jason lived his life with passion and purpose, most evident in his dedication to fitness. Whether coaching others, competing in bodybuilding competitions, or maintaining his own disciplined health routine, fitness was at the core of who he was. But Jason’s interests extended beyond the gym—he was a creative soul who loved cooking, reading, and collecting shoes; passions he often shared with his mother. A lifelong Gamecock fan, Jason’s enthusiasm for life was infectious. He embraced diverse activities, from playing piano to skateboarding, always eager to try new things and challenge himself.

Jason worked at Neal & Pam’s Bar and Grill in Surfside Beach, where his vibrant personality earned him the affectionate nickname “JaySlay”, as in, he “slayed” it at the grill. He loved his restaurant family as much as they loved him and greatly enjoyed having a view of the beach from the kitchen. He was well-known for his signature cooking style and enjoyed karaoke nights, drawing others in with his love of music and his joy in bringing people together.

Jason’s caring and playful nature was unforgettable. He had a gift for making others laugh, earning him a reputation as a class clown and social butterfly. His mother fondly remembers his gentleness and deep compassion for children and animals, while his brother, Ryan, reflects on the pride Jason took in his fitness journey—a testament to his hard work and perseverance.

Jason is survived by his parents, Mary Alice and Eddie King, and his brother, Ryan Spoone. He is also survived by many extended family members, including Joanne and Kris Thompson; Tom, TK (Aubrey), Tori, Jack (Dee), Zachary, Raymond (Michelle), Matthew (Samantha) and Nora Kilgore; Dorothy, David (Amy), Molly, Alan (Meghan) and Bodhi King.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Jackie Kilgore; his biological father, James Spoone; and his cousin, Eric Thompson.

Jason’s legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to his passions will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
