Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Pat of 41 years; his children John (Denise), Michael (Carol), James (preceded by wife Donna), Manuel (Elaine), Linda, Joseph (Lisa), Marysia (Robert); grandchildren Jeanne, Phaedra, Keith, Charity, Amy, David, Michael, Jr., Jeffrey, Matthew, Leanne, Kayla, Todd, Jacob, Justin, Jeremy, Angela, Joseph, Jr., George, Christopher, Jeffrey, and Robert; great grandchildren Ryan, Nicholas, Natalie, James, Arianna, Taylor, Mason, Haley, Brandon, Katrina, Alyssa, Ethan, Audrey, Nicholas, Dominic, Adrianna, Liam, and Hope; sister Pat Simao; nephew Carlos (Kathy); and many friends in Florida and Connecticut. Born in New Bedford, Mass on January 12, 1929 and raised in Portugal, he moved to Hartford, CT where he raised his family. He owned Al & Al Barber Shop and Personal Tee. He was active in soccer, served as the Exalted Ruler of the Manchester, Connecticut Elks Club, was active in the Civitan Club and served on the Manchester Board of Directors for 4 years. Al retired to Florida in 1998. He served on the Board of Directors for the Venice Gardens HOA, and was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Moose Lodge, Habitat for Humanity and the Republican Party. He loved gardening, the Red Sox, the Patriots, UConn Girls Basketball, travelling, and spending time with friends and family. His kindness and unconditional love for others were an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his inner strength, courage, determination, humor, caring spirit, generosity and love of life. Visitation will be at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel on Friday, February 1st from 11:30 AM ââ"" 1:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 1:30 PM with burial to follow at Venice Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, Rye Wilderness Rd., Parrish, FL 34219; Habitat for Humanity, Alligator Road, Venice; or St. Jude’s Hospital.
