Alexander "Alex" Hamilton Gibert, Jr., born October 18,1927, passed away on February 21, 2018 at age 90. Born and raised in Columbia, SC, Alex was the son of the late Alexander Hamilton Gibert, Sr. and Annie Manus Gibert. He attended Columbia area schools and upon graduation, enlisted in the US Navy for several years before returning to Columbia to earn a Business Management Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1950. Afterwards, he was employed by GE Credit Corporation and managed offices in Charleston and Columbia, before retiring as Comptroller of Robinson Machinery Company in Columbia. Alex was an avid USC fan and a member of the Gamecock Club for over 40 years. He was also a past member of Palmetto Club and Fort Jackson Golf Club. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and his hobbies included golfing, fishing and volunteering for Meals on Wheels. He and his wife enjoyed living in the retirement community of Wildewood Downs in northeast Columbia. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Long Gibert; three daughters, Judy Stephens (Taylor) of Mount Pleasant, Alexa Clayton (John) of Blythewood and Shelly Wilson (Nathan) of Clemson. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Jenna Stephens (Chris Kenney), Alexa Assey (John), Carter Hassinger (Peyton), Russell Clayton (Najla), Grant Clayton (Kaylyn), Geoffrey Wilson (Alex) and Ally Wilson. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; and his older sister, Polly Gibert Moren of Salter Path, NC. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Drive, Columbia SC, 29204 or a charity of one's choice. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. with the funeral following at 2:30 p.m. There will be a private family burial. Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park is assisting the family.
