Alton Vernon Hawkos, 86 of Cloquet, formerly of Star Prairie, Wisc. passed away peacefully Thursday, February 23, 2012 in Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Cloquet. He was born Sept. 17, 1925 in Portage, Wisc. to Hubert and Cecelia Hawkos. He grew up in Rio and Milwaukee, Wisc. Alton graduated from Rio High School in 1943. He was a Navy veteran serving from 1943 until 1946. Alton married Lorraine Anderson on February 20, 1954 in Hudson, Wisc. Alton worked for the US Postal Service-Railway Mail Service for 20 years. He also worked for the Highway Postal Buses for 2 years and at the St. Paul Post Office in Data Processing and was a Post Master at Marine on St. Croix. Alton was a member of the New Richmond American Legion, Star Prairie Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, and Bethany Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. Alton was preceded in death by an infant son; and his favorite cousins, Laverne and Gordon Hawkos. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lorraine; daughters, Alexandra Hawkos of Denver, Dianne Barkos of Cloquet, Laura (Edward) Kosciuch of Denver, Christine (Paul) Rajkowski of St. Cloud, and Shelley Hawkos of South Salem, New York; one brother, Thomas Hawkos of Windsor, Wisc.; grandchildren, Misha, Alia and Cole Barkos, Laine, Ethan, and Keenan Rajkowski, Skylar Kosciuch, Calloway, Nathaniel, and Joshua Carlotto. Masonic and Eastern Star services were held on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 in the New Richmond Masonic Temple, 119 East 2nd Street, New Richmond Wisc. Lunch followed. Burial was at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Spooner, Wisc. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
