Betty Mae Brown

May 29th, 1939 - August 10th, 2024

Betty Mae Brown “Bett” went home to the Lord on August 10, 2024 after a three year fight against cancer at the age of 85. Betty died peacefully at home with loved ones by her side in Colorado Springs.

Betty is survived by her children, Barry Markuson (Cindy), Brenda Brunk (Tom), Byrion Brown, Carlie Bush (Chris), and Mason Max Brown II (Tara); fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren with 3 more on the way. She is also survived by her brother James Thomas of Eaton, CO and sister, Allene Thomas of Scobey, Montana. In addition, numerous nieces and nephews who she loved greatly.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Mason Max Brown; her parents, Jack and Lola Thomas; and her siblings Robert Thomas, Ellen Gustad (Thomas), and Kenneth Thomas.

Betty was born in 1939 and raised in Billings, Montana and is the daughter of Lawrence James and Lola Belle Thomas. She had numerous fond memories of her grandparents’ ranch and her great times with her siblings. She took after her mother with a love of cooking, baking and homemaking and was a stay-at-home mom, for which her children are so grateful of the upbringing they had. Later in life, she loved her job working at the Garden of the Gods visitor center for many years and enjoyed her interaction with the many visitors.

Betty was a breast cancer survivor and spent time volunteering for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Colorado Springs.

Betty was a huge Colorado Rockies fan. She was able to go to many games over the years at Coors field and even got to meet her favorite player, Charlie Blackmon when he signed her Blackmon jersey. She loved looking through baseball cards and watching games on TV.

After the loss of her husband, Betty adopted her best friend, Kash from the Pikes Peak Humane Society and he was at her side for the last 8 years and a faithful companion as she took her last breath. He was her very special boy. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make any donation to the Pikes Peak Humane Society.

Betty and family are so grateful to Pikes Peak Hospice and the wonderful, caring staff who cared for her in the last year. Words cannot express the appreciation from our family.

Betty was our next door neighbor for over 30 years. For all of that time she was gracious and kind; in many ways an ideal neighbor. She would supply whatever odd cooking ingredient we might run out of. She enjoyed watching our kids grow up. When they were little, she always made special little Halloween bags for them, and looked forward to their visits. I think she enjoyed watching them scammer through the edge of their property on the way to the park. Betty was a kind woman who quietly made the world better, and our neighborhood nicer.

I happened to do a search today, September 3, on Big Max's birthday; when I saw that Fafa had passed. So sorry, Brown and Brunk, families for the loss of such a special lady. I'm glad I was able to send heartfelt sentiments - via pen and paper - about four years ago and hope she got to read it. I miss her Almond Bread, her beloved plants - and of course - her and Big Max. Much love to you all at this time. Sugar

I met Betty when her brother Jim Thomas introduced her to me during a Department of Colorado Marine Corps League quarterly meeting. It was then I found that Betty was a member of Pikes Peak Detachment 29 and would try to attend meetings when she could. After that meeting, Betty and I would chat ever so often over the phone. She was a joy to talk to and I looked forward to each time I would get an opportunity to speak with her. Her love for the Lord was evident in her graceful chats with me. I will miss her. My prayers and condolences to the family. Jennifer Luckett, Commandant PPD 29.

We are truly sorry for your loss. We only met Faf a few years ago and didn’t see her often but she’s one of the nicest ladies you could ever meet and so pretty. She sure loved her family. Our hearts are full of sadness for all of you. May she rest in peace now❤️
