Betty Arlyeen Halverson, 89, of Mahtowa passed away in Inter-Faith Care Center on Friday, November 18, 2016. She was born July 16, 1927 in McGregor to Allison B. and Edna L. (Runge) Rice. Betty graduated from McGregor High School in 1945. She married Glenn Halverson on September 29, 1945. She worked hard side by side with Glenn on the family farm milking cows, haying and cutting winter firewood. They worked together running the Mahtowa Market in the late 60's to early 70's. They enjoyed fishing and camping trips and, in retirement years, traveling in their motor home and wintering in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Betty was a great wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. Over the years she enjoyed writing poetry, making ceramics, sewing and cooking for family gatherings. Her specialty was delicious and beautifully decorated bowls of potato salad and her candied yams which were often requested for potlucks. She will be sadly missed by family and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Glenn on October 12, 2016; her parents; and one sister, Isla Douglass. She is survived by her three children, Cheryl Kalm (Lee Miller) of Mahtowa, Gary (Marlene) Halverson of Mahtowa and Caryl (Tom) Autio of Cloquet; five grandsons, Bryan (Tara) Kalm of Mahtowa, Jeremy (Debbie) Halverson of Atkinson, Jonathan Halverson, Sr. of Mahtowa, Drew Autio of Superior, Jared Autio of South Lake Tahoe, CA and nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Panorama City, CA and Beryl (Delbert) Skeesick of Weiser, ID; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the wonderful caregivers at St. Luke's Hospital, Inter-Faith Care Center and St. Croix Hospice. A gathering of family and friends for both Betty and Glenn will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 in the Fireside Room of Atkins Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet.
