Betty Kaylor
October 3rd, 1923 - August 3rd, 2015
Mrs. Betty W. Kaylor, widow of Dungan E. Kaylor of Winter Haven, passed away quietly after a brief illness in Temple Terrace, FL. Born in 1923 and a native of Bristol, VA, she moved with her husband and first child, John D. Kaylor, to Winter Haven in 1946. She is survived by daughter Barbara Kaylor Schulz, husband Larry, of Atlanta, GA; sons David E. Kaylor, wife Cathy, Temple Terrace, FL; Steven W. Kaylor, wife Nancy, Danville, VA; L. Mark Kaylor, Winter Haven, FL; grandchildren Deborah Trueheart, U.S. Army Colonel John D. Kaylor Jr., David S. Kaylor, Matthew E. Kaylor, Daniel Schulz, Carrie Kaylor, David Benjamin " Ben" Kaylor, Sherwood S. "Flip" Coleman, Allison Kaylor Fox, Mary Beth Kaylor and Mark Kaylor Jr., and 13 great-grandchildren. Her eldest son John pre-deceased her. Her husband, her children and their children gave her great joy, as did the Blue Ridge Parkway, bright fall leaves, traveling and her golden retriever, Lucy. She found - and taught - pleasure for collecting both stamps and coins, and the growing of colorful orchids and roses. Her cooking, in turn, particularly her variety of breakfasts - her eggs ala golden rod, fried mush with chipped-beef gravy or fresh strawberries over hot biscuits - gave her family great joy. No Christmas celebration was complete without her rich custard and ambrosia She enjoyed playing bridge, and was never bashful about dropping the evil queen on an unsuspecting Hearts player. She refereed Sunday afternoon touch football games from the kitchen window of the family home on the Dundee Road, yelling "go daddy go" and "don't you hurt my daddy." She enjoyed baseball, particularly the New York Yankees. Her favorite player was Derek Jeter, who, she felt, could do no wrong. While raising five children she returned to community college and attended night school. She worked as a librarian at Snively Elementary and served on the Friends of the Library Board in Winter Haven. She taught her children the love of books, birds and education. And much more. A graveside remembrance will be held by the family on Saturday (Aug. 8) at 1 p.m. at Lakeside Memorial Park in Winter Haven. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Region Audubon Society and Friends of the Winter Haven Public Library..
