Message from Joan McDavid November 20, 2014,Ethel Reilly was a woman of great faith, strength, and grace and possessed a mothers love that knew no bounds. I first met Ethel in the early 1960's when the Reilly family, Robert and Ethel and young Robert and Patricia, moved in two doors down from my family on Eccleston Ave. in Walnut Creek. From Pat, I leaned that Ethel had grown up in New York, attending St George's Church in New York City and thriving in the church community there. She did not suffer for friends. She went camping in the Catskill Mountains, danced to Big Band music with this tight knit group and maintained many of these friendships throughout her life. Her father had died when Ethel was 6 years old and then one of her infant twin siblings died shortly after. Ethel's mother raised Ethel and her surviving brother while her mother also worked. Her faith and church community helped her through these difficult times. She and Robert started a family in 1945 with the birth of Robert, and Patricia several years later. Ethel was patriotic, supporting her husband in the Army Air Corps. Young Robert seemed to know his purpose and joined the Marines in the mid 1960's, serving in Vietnam. He often wrote to his parents, looking forward to coming home. When he was killed in action in Vietnam in 1965, Ethel made sure he came home, with the vigil held in the family home. His devastated family struggled to continue on. His father, who had grown up confirmed in the Catholic Church, soon after was received in the Episcopal Church and as before, attended Sf. Paul's with his family. Ethel and Robert were able to travel the world with Pat, who worked as an American Airlines flight attendant for 37 years. A trip to Jerusalem was a most memorable trip. Ethel and Pat continued one of the sweetest mother and daughter bonds. Pat loved her Mom deeply. I reconnected with Ethel and Pat at a Memorial Day Commendation several years ago honoring Robert and other Walnut Creek servicemen killed in action. After the concert and ceremony, I made my way through the crowd to talk to Ethel. She held my hands in her warm hands, looked me in the eyes and smiled her sweet smile-l may as well have been looking into the eyes of Jesus. I felt the love that was so much a part of her. Now we stand on life's shore-While the thread of our minds-Pulls the ship of our souls-Across an ocean of blues. I will miss you Ethel. Joan (November 20, 2014)

I rejoice in having known Tante Inge.  I did not have the pleasure of spending much time with her, but the time we did spend together I cherish.   May we smile at her memory and always hear her laugh.  May we celebrate her life.  I pray that we find comfort in our God, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, as we mourn our loss.
