Bruce Wesley Smalley

Bruce Wesley Smalley, age 75 of Huron, South Dakota, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 13, 2021. Bruce had the ability to command any room (or campfire) with his 6'5" frame, baritone voice, natural charm, good looks, and booming laugh. He loved singing, fishing, the solitude of nature, Spam, popsicles, driving his classic cars and Harley on the open road, canoeing the Boundary Waters, his wife Barb, and his four children (Lance 49, Kadee 48, Jackie 38, Chris 36). Bruce lived his last 20 years with his loving wife in the beloved prairie where he grew up. In the early stages of Alzheimer's, what was an adventurous life became a peaceful one. In the late stages of Alzheimer's, Barb and Jackie provided Bruce with remarkable and gracious care until Bruce's will won out over this cruel disease. Bruce is now resting in peace with his mother and father, Betty and Byron Smalley, whose presence he felt and spoke about until the very end. He was truly a wonderful man who will be missed by his wife, children, sister Barbara (Don), and countless family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 29, at 2:00 pm at American Lutheran Church in Huron, South Dakota with private burial to follow at a later date.
