Camilo S. Viray
April 22nd, 1937 - August 31st, 2014
Del Rey Oaks - In the midst of a beautiful late summer day, Camilo ("Mel") Viray, went home to meet the Lord. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at home. He was born in Masantol Pampanga, the Philippines on April 22, 1937. He moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1958, and worked in numerous restaurants on the Peninsula. He began his career in the restaurant business at Del Monte Lodge and became Executive Chef at Holiday Inn, Carmel, La Playa, Corral De Tierra Country Club and Salinas Valley Country Club. He worked at the Golden Tee Restaurant before retiring in 2004. He loved fishing, all sporting events, the Food Network, trips to Chukchansi and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a very private person with a witty personality. Mel is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Cecilia Bautista Viray; five children: Frances (Tom Mollerus), Michael Viray, Elaine Fruithof (Jeanette "JJ" Jarvis), Camilo Viray, Jr., Rina (Pete Murray); three grandchildren: Erin and Simon Fruithof, and Liam Mollerus. He is the oldest to siblings: Bert, Ralph, Imelda, Orlando, Marrietta, Art, Pat, Jo, Georgia and John. He is the son of Juan and Magdalena Viray. The family would like to thank: Dr. Holz, Dr. Bradley, the staff at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, and VNA Home Hospice. Visitation will be held Friday, September 5, 2014 from 12:00 Noon-8:00 p.m. at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero in Monterey. Services will be held Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 10:00am at Mission Mortuary followed by burial at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. Please visit www.missionmortuary.com for online guestbook.
