Carl passed away peacefully December 15, 2021, at Hospice on Village on The Isle, Venice, Florida, with his devoted wife Alicia at his side. Carl and his sister Joanne grew up in Williamsport, PA. He was named after his father, Carl Stenzel Bauer, the son of German immigrants. His mother is Lois Hollabaugh Crissman, of State College, PA. Lois descended from a long line of Pennsylvania citizens, including four who served in the Revolutionary War. Carl was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Carl's nickname was ""Toddy,"" short for ""Just a little tot."" It was bestowed on him by his maternal grandparents, Anna and Harry. He embraced this nickname all his life. His passions included art, playing tennis, and skiing. He was a member of the Fagowees ski club and loved to watch tennis matches on television. Like his sister, father, and great grandfather, he was an ardent supporter of Penn State football. Carl attended Dickinson Seminary, now Lycoming College, then Syracuse University, after which he was drafted into the army to serve in the Korean War, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. While serving, Carl attended classes at Heidelberg University, where he earned a Ph.D. in psycholinguistics and a medical doctorate. He joined the German university's fraternity, where they frequented a student hangout, The Red Ox Inn. A photo of Carl with his fraternity brothers hangs on the wall of the restaurant to this day. It was while he was in Heidelberg that he met and married Erzsebet Resze, a Hungarian Revolution refugee. They settled in New Jersey, where daughter Julia Elizabeth was born, then moved to Pennsylvania a year later, where son David Carl was born in 1959. Carl used his extensive education to obtain a position as linguistics professor at Bloomsburg State University, Pennsylvania, then as a clinical forensic psychologist for Saint Elizabeth's Hospital for the criminally insane in Washington, D.C. in 1966. In 1974, Carl accepted a civil service position with the U.S. Army as Director of Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs in Heidelberg, Germany. Later, Carl served as a Clinical Director for the U.S. Army, Fort Carson, Colorado. After losing Erzsi to cancer, Carl met and married Alicia Finzel in 1987, to whom he stayed happily married until his passing. He wrote in his autobiography that when he met Alicia, ""I was unabashedly enraptured with her. It was mutual magic."" After his retirement, Carl and Alicia lived in Prescott Valley, Arizona, then Venice, Florida to reside at Village On The Isle, a retirement community, where they spent the next ten years being well taken care of. Carl is survived by his wife, Alicia; sister Joanne Belfield and brother-in-law Edward Belfield; niece Barbra Bureau; nephew Thomas Belfield; daughter Julie Bauer; son David Bauer; granddaughters Olivia Bauer and Sara Jackson; grandson Jack Bauer, and great-grandson Douglas Jackson. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to the Village on The Isle Partners Program.
