WEST COLUMBIA—Funeral services for Charles Augustus Chavis, 78, of West Columbia, will be held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery on Priceville Road in Gilbert. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210. Mr. Chavis, beloved husband of the late Ouida Long Chavis, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2012. Born in Cameron, he was a son of the late George Robert Chavis, Sr. and Ethel Josephine Bryan Chavis. He was a lifetime area resident and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He retired from Southeastern Freight Lines, working part-time for Carolina International Trucking. Surviving are his daughters, Charlotte Chavis Cohen (Jimmy) of Pelzer and Gina Chavis Connelly (Doug) of Lexington; son, David L. Chavis of West Columbia; grandchildren, Keighly, Travis, Kerrie, Christine, Jamie (Shanna) and Nikki; great-grandchildren, Reed, Ava, Nicholas and Abby; sisters, Mary C. Torrence, of Surfside, Annie Mae C. Dowd of Gaston, Edith C. Patterson of Warren, MI, Louise C. Joyner of Charleston and Lillian C. Flood of Asheville, NC ; brothers, Jimmy E. Chavis of Hanford, CA and Henry H. Chavis of Neeses. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles A. Chavis, Jr. and a brother, George R. Chavis, Jr.
