Charlotte Kaye Powers
April 9th, 1944 - April 6th, 2006
Charlotte Kaye (Hill) Powers, age 62 of Esko, died Thursday, April 6, 2006 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, after a courageous 2 ½ year battle with esophageal cancer. Charlotte "Bunny" Powers was born Easter Sunday, April 9, 1944 in Ironwood, Michigan to Owen J. and Lois L. (Purdy) Hill. She moved to Duluth in 1954 and graduated from East High School in 1962. Charlotte graduated from UMD in 1966 with a B.A. in Sociology and English. She was active in the Wesley Foundation and was Commander of Angel Flight. She worked at Northwestern Bell for several years. Charlotte was one of twenty-five people selected to attend and graduate from St. Scholastica with a B.S. designated to teach disadvantaged youth. Charlotte taught at Lincoln Elementary in Duluth for several years. In 2003 she retired after 20 years at the Little Eskomo Nursery School and also has worked as the Outreach Coordinator for the Esko Early Childhood and Family Education Program. Charlotte married H. Phillip Powers July 29, 1967 in Duluth and has lived in Esko since 1973 raising their children Scott and Christina. Bunny enjoyed her family, knitting, crocheting, needle point, stamping and was an avid reader. She was also active in many area clubs and community theatre. She has a wonderful foreign doll and American Doll collection. Bunny was a great cook and known for her fabulous hors d' oeuvres at the Powers annual holiday party. Charlotte was a former member of Woodland United Methodist Church and with Phill was one of the five families who formed the Northwood United Methodist Church in Esko. She held many positions in the church including Youth Director, Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer. She was preceded in death by her parents and uncle, Donald Purdy. Charlotte is survived by her husband, Phillip; son, Scott (Jenny Chapik) Powers of Esko; daughter, Christina (Shawn) Reed of Proctor; brothers, James (Barb) Hill of Duluth, Gary of Ottawa, Canada; nephew, Bryan (Jessica) Hill of Minneapolis; nieces, Sara Hill of Duluth and Dr. Amy Hill of Greeley, Colorado; William Evans of Chicago; and other family in Ironwood, Michigan and Marion, Ohio. The family would like to thank all the doctors and staff at the Oncology Dept. at the Duluth Clinic, the Infusion Center, Miller Dwan Radiology Dept. and St. Mary's ICU, Oncology Ward and Hospice Program for their genuine concern and care for Charlotte over the past 2 ½ years. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
