Clarellen Howerton, 101, passed away September 13, 2018 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Born to Alice (Sweeney) and William Mulligan in Essex, Illinois, she later resided in Chicago, Illinois. She attended St. Mary's High School and Loyola University. She was employed at Western Electric's Hawthorn Works where she met her future husband, Joseph W. Howerton. They were married for 61 years, first residing in Oak Park, Illinois and then in Downers Grove, Illinois where they raised their family and participated in many civic, volunteer and social groups. Clarellen and her husband later resided in Prestbury, Illinois and then in Rancho Bernardo, California for many wonderful years of retirement. Mrs. Howerton moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2005 following her husband's death. Friends and family will remember Clarellen as a devoted wife and mother, avid reader, crossword puzzle whiz, and Women's League golfer. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Paul Catholic Church in Colorado Springs.Special thanks to the staff at Brookdale Village at Skyline who took such loving care of Clarellen while she resided there, and the compassionate caretakers from Pikes Peak Hospice.She is survived by her children and their spouses, JoEllen Sur (Robert Potts) of Baltimore, Maryland, J. William (Betsy) Howerton of Concord, Massachusetts, Beth Anne Howerton of Colorado Springs, Colorado, David (Anne) Howerton of Orinda, California, and Meg (Tom) Claggett of Evanston, Illinois; as well as twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and her two sisters, Margaret Costello and Jeanne Costello of Elmhurst, Illinois. Memorial Service, 11:00AM, Saturday, October 20, 2018, St. Paul Catholic Church, 9 El Pomar Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund, 1100 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa 52003.
