Curtis Martin Kubis
June 13th, 1956 - February 16th, 2017
Curtis Martin Kubis, 60, of Saginaw, was born June 13, 1956 and died in St. Luke's ICU after a long battle with health issues on Thursday, February 16, 2017. Curt was a 1975 graduate of AlBrook High School in Saginaw. Curt was a lifelong resident of Saginaw where he enjoyed being able to hunt and fish as much as he could. Curt was a member of several gun clubs, Northwestern Gun Club, Old Vermillion Trail and Proctor Skeet, and enjoyed shooting clay pigeons for sport and competition, achieving several awards and trophies. His wheelchair never kept him from enjoying the outdoors and sports. He also enjoyed spending time on the Party Barge Pontoon fishing the area lakes catching whatever he could. In his healthier years he liked to spearfish. He was looking forward to using his new toy this year, a 4X4 Ford van with Mattrax, going out to the deer stand and wherever it would go, he called it his ultimate wheelchair. He had wanted one since he was paralyzed in 1974 and finally got one and was hopeful to get out in it this year. He will have one last ride with his best friends, Josh Spikberg and Al Price and of course, Tank, to visit the old deer stand one last time. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Kubis in 2014 and his nephew, Zachary "Zak" Kubis in 1996. Curt is survived by his father, Lawrence "Cub" Kubis; sister, Kristel Kubis; and his beloved chocolate lab, Tank. Curt's family would love to thank the medical team of doctors that Curt had the last few years helping him get through his illness, Dr. David Arvold, Dr. Sandy Popham, Dr. Dean Weber, Dr. Harmony Tyner and recently, Dr. David Ruta. Words cannot express the deep gratitude the family and Curt hold for you for the kindness and great care he received from all of you. You really made him feel special. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet. Visitation will continue from 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service, Wednesday, February 22, 2017 in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, followed by a lunch in the Fireside Room of the funeral home. The family has requested everyone wear camouflage attire in honor of Curt. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Luke's Small Things Fund.
