Daniel Francis Bachhuber

Daniel Francis Bachhuber age 67, of St. Paul Dan was a brilliant teacher, gifted writer, beloved husband, and father. Born in 1951 in Milwaukee to Dr. Edward A. Bachhuber and Blue Ryan Bachhuber, Dan grew up in a lively family of seven siblings. He attended Catholic schools, graduated from Marquette University, received an M.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and trained as an elementary school teacher at the International Center for Montessori Studies in Bergamo, Italy. For twenty-five years he taught 4 – 6th grades in the St. Paul Public Schools, mostly at J. J. Hill Montessori. A lifelong advocate for the emotional lives of children, he published a book of essays, Teaching to the Soul: Exploring the Potential of Children and the Drawbacks of Conventional Education, based on interviews with former students, and a book of poetry, Mozart's Carriage. Funny, high-spirited and tender-hearted, Dan gave his whole heart to every endeavor. He adored his family. Marrying Margaret Todd Maitland in 1986, they raised their son, Peter, with Dan's enthusiasms-sports, fishing, a sense of humor, a belief in honest communication with others. Peter now serves as a Minnesota State Trooper. In 2014 Dan and Todd rejoiced in Peter's marriage to Maria Morales, and in their grandchildren, Max and Sofi. Dan suffered periods of major depression. During the past five years he worked tirelessly to recover his health, actively sought and gave support in Twelve-Step groups, honed his skills at tennis and golf, and deepened his spiritual life. Despite every effort and treatment for the disease of depression, he died at home on November 13, 2018. We hold Dan in gratitude and the light of God's love. He will be sorely missed.
