Deane L. Farnsworth

Deane L. Farnsworth, age 85, of Venice, Florida, and Sandwich, NH, passed away peacefully December 26, 2017 in Venice. His wife of nearly 50 years, Carol E. Farnsworth, was by his side. Deane was born in 1932 in Portland, Maine, and spent most of his youth in Calais, ME, where he acquired a life-long love of nature and the outdoors. He often took his family camping or fishing, and always kept a large vegetable garden. Even in his final years, he tended a patch of vegetables and grew prize-winning avocados on his small plot in Venice. Deane graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1951, where had a joined the Naval Reserve at age 17. His first professional job, repairing calculators with Friden Corporation, led to a long and successful career managing large manufacturing operations. After 20 years with Friden, he became Senior Vice President for Manufacturing at Kronos in Burlington, MA. Deane rounded out his professional career as a Senior VP with Labsphere in Sutton, NH. In addition to his career in manufacturing Deane worked with his wife, Carol, in an active antique business. As a professional auctioneer, Deane held regular auctions in Sandwich, NH and in Massachusetts. They enjoyed annual antique-buying trips to England, where they would purchase items for their shop in Meredith, NH. As E-Bay came into vogue, Deane spent many hours packing and shipping items sold in their online store. Deane was an avid tennis player, active in the Tennis Club at the Plantation in Venice. He also was an excellent bridge, poker and ""Oh, Hell"" card player, and enjoyed regular trips to Las Vegas. He was also a life member of the Triangle Masonic Lodge # 0001 in Portland, Maine. Deane is survived by his wife, Carol, children Deana Kenney, Diane Farnsworth and Gary Farnsworth, all of Pensacola, Florida, step-son John Bjorklund of Natick, MA, and grandchildren Bryan Bjorklund, Stephanie & Ashley Farnsworth, John Kenney and Derrick Shane. A celebration of Deane's life will be held Friday, January 5 at 4 PM at the Plantation Golf & Country Club, 500 Rockley Blvd, Venice, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, 23 Science Center Road, Holderness, NH, 03245, where Deane and Carol spent many hours volunteering.
