Dorothy Evelyn Hanon
August 27th, 1914 - February 28th, 2013
Monterey? Dorothy Hanon, affectionately known to her family as Grammy, passed away on February 28, 2013 at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She was 98. Dorothy was born in Monterey on August 27, 1914, and was a lifetime resident of the area. Her parents were Fred Silva and the former Rose Bento. Her paternal grandfather, Manuel Silva was a whaling captain at Point Lobos. In 1932 Dorothy married John Billman, a Massachusetts native. They had two children, John and Josephine. Her husband passed away in 1963. Dorothy was an accomplished artist in oils and in watercolors, and she played the piano and organ. She worked at Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital with the nursing staff, and she worked at Silas B. Hayes Hospital, Fort Ord, in pediatrics. Later she worked at La Porte?s Antiques and Furnishings in Pacific Grove. She loved to read, and she had a vast knowledge of local and California history and she enjoyed sharing it with others. In 1970 Dorothy married Edward Hanon. Dorothy and Ed enjoyed traveling and square dancing, and in their later years they hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back. Ed passed away in 2003. Dorothy is survived by her children John (Dolores) Billman and Josephine (Frank) Donangelo, seven grandchildren, Jackie (Richard) Garza, Mark (Jo Ann) Donangelo, Mike (Jo Ann) Donangelo, John (Kanika) Donangelo, John (Greta) Billman, Brendan (Karen) Billman and Anne (Tony) Marci, 15 great-grandchildren, brother William Marquardt, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Ted Silva, Richard Silva, Joseph Silva and sister Lillian Bennett. The family wishes to thank the staff at Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital for their loving care of our Grammy. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital, 1249 Josselyn Canyon Road, Monterey, CA. 93940 for the establishment of a memorial in Dorothy?s memory. The Rosary will be said on Friday, March 8, 2013, 7 pm at the Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 10:30 at San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey.
