Dorothy Joan McCall

Mrs. Dorothy J. McCall passed away 45 minutes past midnight, on the morning of December 11th, 2023. She passed quietly in her sleep of natural causes in Monterey, CA. Mom was cremated at Mission Mortuary Seaside and will be placed in an outdoor nice in a granite columbarium on Thursday, January 11th, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Mission Memorial Park. Friends and family are welcome. Our mother was born Dorothia Roberta Joan Moses and Wednesday, March 27, 1940, in Van Buren, Arkansas at 11:00 am. Born to Willie Moses and Syble (Jolly) Moses, both of Van Buren, Arkansas. Dorothy had an older brother Bill who passed away a few years ago, and a sister, Louise, who lives in Monterey. Dorothy had several nicknames, Dotty, Dotty Jo, Mom, Omi, Grandma, used by many that knew and loved her. Willie and Syble moved to California and settled in Hollister. While living in Hollister, Dorothy met and then married Larry McCall. Larry Eugene McCall was born June 20th, 1938, in Bakersfield, CA. Larry joined the US Army in 1955. Dorothy and Larry were married April 24, 1958, in Hollister, CA. They soon started their adventure, traveling to many places, Fort Ord, CA., Fort Totten, New York, El Paso, TX., Fort Bliss, TX., Thailand, Schweinfurt Germany, Oakland, CA., Stuttgart Germany, Bad Kreuznach Germany, Aurora, CO., and traveling across the United States and Europe. Larry (husband) died in 1988, and Dorothy stayed at the house in Seaside until she passed. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Louise, and four children, David, Linda, Larry, and Dawn. Louise is living in Monterey and has 2 children, 1 grandchild. David is married to Robin, lives in Marina, CA, has 2 children, and 6 grandchildren. Linda is living in Arizona, has 2 children, and 3 grandchildren. Larry is married to Stacy, lives in Nebraska, has 2 children, and 8 grandchildren. Dawn is married to Randell, lives in Paicines, CA., has 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Memories: Living in New York, for our first time with real snow, reminded me of the Christmas movie, when Mom dressed Larry in one of those red head-to-toe suits, where he walked like a mummy and cried the whole time because he couldn't move. Another memory comes to mind, when we lived just outside of Ela Paso, TX., where it was so hot, the tops of our feed blistered when playing. Living in Thailand where the snakes aways crawled into the yard and we had a maid/care person named "Tungbi". Mom and Dad threw several parties where many gathered and danced with the outside yard lit with colored lights. Mom loved working in her backyard garden. Planting and growing many flowers and plants. Mom, like her Dad, had a "green thumb" and could get anything to grow. Because Mom and Dad were married for 33 years, and Dad was a wounded Vet, they both had the opportunity to be buried at Arlington Cemetery but chose to stay in the area. Once the family went to spend their Easter at our Grandparents (Burnice and Edna) on a country farm. We milked cows, churned butter, hunted Easter eggs in the tall grass and corn field. Dorothy made a lot of friends at every post we were stationed at, and she loved to write letters. She had exquisite handwriting. Dorothy wrote so many letters that evidentially she switched over to a typewriter. She wore out several typewriters over the years, keeping up correspondence between all her friends. Dorothy, for many years worked at the Seaside voting booths at every election. She was also very involved with the local Girl Scouts for many years. Dorothy loved bowling and bowled in clubs at every station we shipped to. Dorothy, at every post where we were stationed always volunteered with NCO club, NCO wives club, post libraries, school libraries, Ord Thrift Shop, chaperoned at many outings and functions and was never too busy to lend a hand anywhere they needed one.
