Dr. Anne Marshall Huston

September 22nd, 1926 - August 26th, 2024

 

    Anne Clark Marshall of 501 V.E.S. Road, Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg, passed away Monday, August 26, 2024. She was the daughter of Anne Clark Marshall  and George Fox Marshall. She is survived by a daughter, Anne Elizabeth Ezum,  a sister Harriet Marshall Galbraith, and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James Alvin Huston, her son, William Elliott Bippus, Jr.; a step-son, James Webb Huston, a step-daughter, Nita Diane Woodruff, two older brothers, George  Fox Marshall, Jr. and Robert Clark Marshall; and a brother-in-law, William Jackson Galbraith, Jr.

    She was born in High Point, North Carolina, but until moving to Lynchburg in 1970, she spent most of her life in Williamsburg, Virginia. She received her A.B. and M.Ed. degrees at the College of William and Mary, and her Ed.D. degree at the University of Virginia. She was an elementary school teacher, and later, Reading Consultant and Coordinator, and Coordinator of a Science Enrichment Program for the Williamsburg-James City County school system, and an Instructor for the College of William and Mary. At the University of Lynchburg she was Professor of Education and Human Development and Director of the Reading Clinic and also taught classes in the classics. When she retired, she was awarded Professor Emeritus status. While working on her doctoral degree at UVA she had a Teaching Fellowship. Afterward, she was a visiting Assistant Professor of Education on campus at the University of Virginia. 

    She was a Consultant in Education to certain Virginia public school systems and served on various committees of the State Department of Education. She read professional papers in England, Ireland, and various cities in the United States, and presented numerous workshops and presentations for professional organizations, schools, and school districts. She was a Charter Member and served as President of the Virginia State Reading Educators. She was a member of the International Reading Association.

    Her professional books include Understanding Dyslexia, Common Sense About Dyslexia, and with her husband two novels, Violet Storm, A Novel of South Carolina During Reconstruction, and Double Cross Fire (WWII historical novel). She was Volume Editor for Education: Ends and Means and Tyranny and Freedom for Lynchburg College’s Symposium Readings: Classical Selections on Great Issues. In addition, she wrote numerous articles, chapters, and reviews for professional journals and an encyclopedia. She also edited her husband’s Roads Without Birds, and contributed an Appendix, “Tips for Teaching,” in his A Historian’s Handbook. Indeed, she always assisted him with his many books, articles, and newspaper columns.

    She received the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award and was a nominee for Sears Award for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Leadership at the University of Lynchburg. 

    Additional honors include membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, and Gold Key Honor Societies and inclusion in International Who’s Who of Intellectuals, World Who’s Who of Women, Who’s Who of Women, International Who’s Who of Professional and Business Women, World Who’s Who of Women in Education, Outstanding Young Women of America, Who’s Who in Virginia, Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, Personalities of the South, and other biographical entries.

    She and her husband, a World War II veteran, author of many books and articles, honored with numerous awards by the government and others, had the special honor of being invited by President Sarkozy of France, as guests of France, to fly to Paris so that her husband might be presented the French Legion of Honor, Knight. They also received a private tour of Versailles Palace, and were at Normandy Beach where Jim was on the platform with the then President Obama, Prince Charles and Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Great Britain, and Prime Minister Stephen H1d as Regent, Vice-Regent, Chaplain, Historian, and Chairman of the Committees of Volunteer Information Specialist, Service for Veterans, DAR Good Citizens, Program, National Defense, and Newsletter. She also served as a District III Committee Chairman and as Virginia State Chairman of the DAR Magazine Committee.

As a member of the Capt. Sally Tompkins Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy has she served as officer of Military Service Awards.

She loved to ride horses, and for a number of years was a member of the Bedford County Hunt.

.She is a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, and activities there included serving on the Vestry, and. choir member for over 30 years, and President of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW). Before moving to Lynchburg she was a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church and was a Sunday school teacher, adult adviser to the Youth Group, and member of the choir. She was a member of the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg.

Her travels included Europe, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Turkey, Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, Tahiti, and the Virgin Islands.

   The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 P.M. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with Rev. Matt Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
