Dr. Carl Albert Ek, 81, passed away in the early hours of March 23. After a long struggle with health problems and surrounded by loved ones, Carl drew his last breath. Carl was a disabled Navy veteran and will be buried in the National Cemetery at Fort Jackson. For many years he taught school and served in various administrative capacities. He cared so much for his students especially the ones who seemed to be suffering. He tried diligently to help distressed students and they never forgot him. Carl marched to the beat of his own drummer never mindlessly following the crowd, adhering to his principles despite resistance from those who resisted change. His work for helping students during the integration process in Kershaw County garnered the praise of outside evaluators. Carl loved the natural world and even stopped exterminators from spraying on his yard because he noticed that wildlife like lizards succumbed to the treatment. In particular, he enjoyed rock and fossil hunting, a hobby he shared with his family. A self-taught lapidary artist, he polished stones and made cabochons from the rough to perfection. He leaves behind a brokenhearted wife Lala Carr Steelman and daughter Lala Christina Ek. He also has two adult sons Ernest and Stuart Ek and several grandchildren. His mother Mary Louise Ek and Father Carl Ek both predeceased him. Other relatives with whom he had very special relationships include Captain Robert LeClaire and Richard LeClaire and two nieces, Samantha Smith and Nicole Carter. His family will always hold him in their hearts. He had an unmatched natural wit. He maintained his wondrous sense of humor throughout his many health battles. His family requests privacy to mourn his passing. We miss him so. Never to be forgotten.

Greenlawn Memorial Park

Greenlawn Memorial Park is one of Columbia's most historic perpetual care cemeteries. This gorgeous setting combines serenity, natural beauty, and diligent care for generations of families. North Lake, located in the center of our park, offers a water feature and is the site of many local events, including an annual Easter sunrise service, a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. The park also has a veteran's section, private family estates, a columbarium with niches for cremated remains, and an incredible granite mausoleum....
