Edithe Elvera Carlson
June 2nd, 1923 - January 14th, 2018
Edithe Elvera Carlson, 94 of Cloquet passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She was born June 2, 1923 to Joseph and Elsie Kiefer. Edithe attended school in Mahtowa and then Barnum High School graduating in 1941. Following high school she worked at St. Paul Book and Stationary in St Paul, Minnesota, and then worked in Chicago. She traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to be married to her high school sweetheart and lifetime love, Lloyd Carlson on August 26, 1944. At the conclusion of the war they moved back home where she worked in the Carlton County Auditor's Office until the birth of their son. They built their home in rural Mahtowa near Park Lake. She enjoyed summers at the Sturgeon Lake "cabin" where families and friends enjoyed her lively and warm hospitality along with a cup of coffee. She invested her life in family and the two church homes she loved, Mahtowa Covenant Church and Grace Baptist Church, serving both with deep devotion and love. Moving to Cloquet in 1972, she was involved in Cloquet Area Christian Women Clubs, Christian Couples Club, the Cloquet Gideon Auxiliary, leading Bible studies. But most importantly, she was a model of faithful devotion as we watched her 17 years of caregiving to husband Lloyd after a stroke left him in need of significant care. The fearless, constant, careful care done in that joyful "can do" attitude taught us well. She was and the family is grateful for the 5 years of loving care provided at Evergreen Assisted Living, and for the past 6 months the daily careful attention of the staff on the Rehab Floor at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She also so appreciated the regular delivery of Russell Stover and other care packages as well as the assistance of her special "Miss Atkinson", Kimmy. She was preceded in death by an infant son; husband, Lloyd; sister, Ethel Stewart; brother, Clarence Kiefer. She is survived by son, Kendall (Cheryl) Carlson of Barnum; grandson, Kristofer (fiance, McKenzie Larson) of Apple Valley; sisters, Millie Eklund of Duluth and Betty (Ed) Carlson of Duluth; sister-in-law, Lois Johnson of Carlton; brothers-in -law, Will (Jan) Carlson of Forest Lake and Herman Asproth of New Brighton; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation: 10 until the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service Friday, January 19, 2018 in the Barnum Community Church. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the church social hall. Memorials preferred to Gideons. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Cloquet. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
