Farley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Venice
Edward R. Hurley
March 17th, 1937 - February 24th, 2018
Ed was born March 17, 1937 and in the years since we have all had the benefit of his kind heart, warm smile and those beautiful blues eyes. Growing up on a small farm in Oxford, Ohio he woke early to typical farm chores and ran a trap line catching muskrat, raccoon and mink, that provided him with pocket money. His popularity and being a football and track star in high school set the stage for his social and athletic successes in years to come. In high school he started dating Jan Williams, who was to become his wife while they attended Miami University. After earning an Architecture degree he was offered an internship by the city of London, England. They packed up their one year old daughter, Jill and settled in to Old Coulsdon, where Ed took the train into London daily. While in England the young couple's second child, Pam was born. After being a City Planner for the State of Ohio, he and Bill Schnaufer opened Hurley, Schnaufer and Associates, in Columbus, Ohio. After many years he became the sole owner of CDC of Ohio, a city planning company, until his retirement in 2003. Ed's business and architectural knowledge helped him in his successful real estate investments. In 1979, his marriage ended in divorce though Ed and Jan remained life long friends. Being very active Ed was involved in golf, softball, skiing, sailing and numerous social and professional organizations. As a member of the Columbus Ski Club he skied more mountains across the USA and Europe than one can imagine. While his skills as a softball player and then player/coach were highly respected his after-game parties were renowned. From spring until fall he could be found sailing Lake Erie, first on a 27′ Tanzer and on a 35′ BaBa (ocean quality) sail boat. Carolyn Boaz, longtime partner, participated in many ski and sailing adventures with Ed. On a ski trip to Holiday Valley, New York, Ed's best friend Charlie Walker introduced him to Sally Miller. Ed and Sally have been together for 27 years. They married in 2001 in Bermuda. Together they enjoyed retirement sailing, golfing, fishing and travels to Europe, South Pacific, Hawaii and Costa Rica among others. After Ed's retirement a sleeping desire for painting emerged. His watercolors provided enduring beauty as well as many thousands of dollars of donations to a Jan Hurley Cancer Research Fund and Center at Mt. Carmel, St. Ann’s Hospital. Along with Ed and Sally's long residence at Hidden Lake, Columbus, Ohio they spent half of the year in Venice, Florida where he passed away peacefully on February 24, 2018. By being . . . Ed made us all better.
