Ervin was fondly known as "Spud" to our family. Spud and Vera were dear friends to my parents in WV. That friendship and loyalty remained strong over the years and across many miles. They were present for my high school graduation. The day after graduation Spud took me to the State Police Hqtr to take the written exam to get my learners permit to drive. He warned me I had better pass, as he was going to be visiting with the troopers while I tested and he did not want to be embarrassed by my score. The pressure was on. I did pass and we both went home with a sense of accomplishment. That was a milestone in my young life 46 years ago and I'm so glad it was shared with him. He was truly an inspiration and his memory will be alive in my heart as long as I live. Our love and prayers go to you, Vera, and the family in this time of loss. We love you. Jeannie and Jim

I wanted to express my sypathies at the passing of your husband, father and grandfather. I knew him first as a lawyer, and then as a judge, at the Federal Building, and he was always warm and friendly as well as highly professional. A true gentleman.

Bill and I were so sorry to hear that our favorite Bruneau "copper" is gone. Bill and I enjoyed so much our Sunday mornings with Giff when he would come to the house with doughnuts to have coffee. Keeping track of he and Vera through Memorial Day services in Bruneau have been a pleasure.

I had the pleasure of working with Giff for a number of years, he was one of the original 12 STEP team members. He loved working Broadway and could be found on the south end most of the time. I am not sure who gave him the nick name Broadway Joe but it fit. During the 1988 air show with the Blue Angles the Air force offered the STEP a ride in a KC10 refueler and I am not sure if it's true but I was told that Giff had never flown before that day. After seeing he was in the air force I am not sure. The last time I saw him he was in Silver City this last summer and he looked and sounded great just the way I want to remember him.

Erv's Family: I have a lot of fond memories of Erv, his crusty humor, and unfailling dedication to the profession. He guarded Broadway Avenue like it was his own property. Younger officers got their share of hazing, but always knew Erv was there for them. As a "kid Lieutenant" I got in a tussle with Carl Micarelli at the 7-11 on Vista/Nez Perce. Erv was my first backup and we rolled around on the floor of the store together getting Carl into cuffs--great fun, great memories! I'll miss Erv and remember him fondly. Larry

Dan Charboneau

My remembrance of Erv go back to the early 70s when I was a young cadet officer assigned briefly to the detectives under his command. I remember one time when we had the adolescent and the other room being interviewed. When he decided to take flight jumped through a window partition and landed right in front of me. He charged me as if I should move but instead I stood my ground grabbed him by the neck deposited them in a chair next to Erv. I wasn't too sure who was more startled that kid or Erv. May God bless him and his family. Anyone who wore the badge for that many years deserves recognition for the Lord as part of St. Peter's brigade and he was one of the finest. Dan Charbonneau, retired Col. of the Idaho State police.
